BETTER LATE THAN NEVER

LEAVING FOR VACATION A COUPLE DAYS AFTER A CONTEST PUT US WAY BEHIND ON THIS POST OF THE 4TH OF JULY 50TH ANNUAL SUN N’ SURF CONTEST IN MEMORY OF BILL MURRAY. SO SORRY FOR THE DELAY.

St. Augustine Beach Pier was the location for the 50th Annual Sun n’ Surf 4th of July Surf Contest, hosted by ESA-St. Augustine District (ESA-SAFL). At first light the ocean was once again awarding our members with some fun offshore waist high southerly swell waves for the start of the contest. The first division and heats of the morning were the Men’s Open shortboard and this division impressed from the start. Being the largest division of the district the competitors took advantage of the incoming high tide push and showed those in attendance the high performance realm of small wave surfing. Boys U12, U14, U16, and U18 divisions had some of the closest battles all season and once again showed the level and rise of talent our district holds. Not to be out done were the Girls U14, U16, and U18. Although the tides and winds changed the conditions for the start of their divisions, the girls were ready to surf and not a wave went by unridden. The girls were absolutely frothing.

Being that this year marks the 50th anniversary of this well known event, the locals came out and showed their support of the event and shared a lot of history from years past to our new members as well as all the people on the beach this year. The founders of the Sun n’ Surf Shop, The Bernstein brothers’ Mark and Gary were in attendance, as well as Tory Strange, Mark Bailey, Charlie Quick, Lynn Harrington, David Bradfield, Terry Drozd, Craig Davis and a lot of other past contestants that remember the early days of the event and how far it has come since the start.

Longboards during the summer months are the norm due to the small surf during the summer doldrums. The Sun n’ Surf 4th of July contest is no exception and the contestants came out strong looking to make claim of their respective division(s). The longboard divisions showcased both a new school and old school approach. Huge props go out to our local legends that surfed in the event as they have since the beginning. Mr. Burgess Autrey and Mr. Joe Beach. Well done gentleman. Inspiring!

Well that is a wrap on another Sun n’ Surf 4th of July Surf Contest. Thanks to all the competitors and parents that were able to attend. Big thanks to our volunteers for all your hard work both setting up the event, cooking, tabulating, t-shirt handouts, judging, and breaking down. We know who you are and couldn’t do it all without you.

Congrats to all of the finalist.

EASTERNS 2015

ESA TentsThe Eastern Surfing Association’s (ESA) 2015 Easterns® Surfing Championship presented by the Outer Banks Tourism Bureau was held September 20-26th at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head, North Carolina. The contest was again blessed with waves however a nor’easter stalled off the coast for the entire event creating for some challenging conditions for both the Adult divisions as well as the super competitive Youth divisions. Competitors from Eastern Surfing Associations’’ 24 districts and three regional championship qualifiers were on hand to see who is the best amateur surfers along the East Coast.

Once again Eastern Surfing Association’s (ESA) St. Augustine District (SAFL) had a strong showing with a total of 18 representatives. Each member that qualified did so while competing in the regular 2014 season which gave seeds to the Southeast Regional Championship held this past April in Melbourne Beach, Florida. The highest placing members were then seeded into EASTERNS. This was one of our biggest and best showings to date. ESA-SAFL had nine (9) finalists of the eighteen (18) members that represented ESA-SAFL on the big stage. St. Augustine is no stranger to having some of the brightest up and coming youth and amateur adults along the East Coast.

Most of the members arrived September 19th and immediately tested the surf. Speaking of surf the conditions started off small the first morning of the event and steadily increased to 5-7’ surf with 10-15’  wave faces with an interval of between 7-9 seconds. Meaning we had a major swell. Being the contest is located next to one of the largest piers on the east coast our members felt comfortable having a few piers nearby (practice) which surely made it much easier to paddle out during the larger stormy days. The surf was brought to us by a low developing off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia which then added to the size once Tropical storm IDA move in from the southeast. The two swell trains established some sizeable surf for all the contestants which peaked on the last few days of the event. Strangely enough the water was warm and quite comfortable compared to years past.

A majority of the members took time throughout the week to visit some landmark locations. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Jockey’s Ridge, Wright Brothers Memorial, North Carolina Aquarium, Frisco Pier, Rodanthe Pier and a lot of little surf spots in between. Special thanks to Co-Director Shantel DeLorenzo, Parents; John Blevins and Ali Lange for helping prepare the Low Country Boil dinner we had for our district  members.  Special Guests Michelle Sommers Executive Director, Recent East Coast hall of Fame inductee Pamela Hill S.E. Regional Director, and Virginia Beach Director Jeanine Montgomery ( thanks for the shrimp and salsa ) came by for some laughs and good old fashion southern hospitality.

We are proud of all our members for qualifying for 2015 EASTERNS and special thanks goes out to Steven “Bubba” Tyson for being part of the water patrol during the event and being awarded the “Sportsmanship Award”. Congratulations to everyone. Proud of your accomplishments and proud to call you a ESA-SAFL MEMBER!

Two divisons Menehune longboard and Jr. Women longboard had to be canceled due to the weather and conditions. WOW! What an accomplishment to even make it to Easterns!

CONTEST CANCELED

THE LAST CONTEST OF THE YEAR SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW 12/15/2013 AT MARY STREET IS CANCELED.  The year is officially over.  Final points are being tallied and will be posted later this week.  Season banquet info to be posted soon, we are looking at the second week of January.  Unfortunately the weather for tomorrow is calling for strong offshore winds.  Outgoing low tide as well as showers and potentially small waves have forced the contest to be canceled.  Everyone surfed incredible this year. The 2014 season is going to be one for the ages.  Looking forward to Regionals and our season ending banquet.

Halloween Contest #4

ESA – St. Augustine, Fl.  District

Benefit for Burgess Autrey / Halloween Surf Contest / October 27, 2013

Benefit for Burgess Autrey / Halloween Surf Contest hosted by ESA – St. Augustine, Fl. during the 4th stop of the district season was a great day with some truly great people. Sunday morning saw the beginning of Fall weather and the members came out ready to tackle the “EPIC” surf conditions. Well not exactly epic but that did not scare off the members.

We had a great turn out with current, past and hopefully future members attending the contest. Although considerably small conditions, contestants rose to the challenge and made for some exciting heats. Each heat saw great action in surfing which led to a wonderful event for the parents and beach goers. ESA – St. Augustine donated all proceeds to Burgess Autrey for his recent medical expenses incurred from his open heart surgery. We even had two of our members Zoe Bonik and Eden Lange make cookies the evening before which they sold at the event and raised money all day which was given to Burgess at the trophy ceremony. That moment was quite incredible. Information on how to contact Burgess Autrey and or donating to the Medical Expense Fund is listed below. On with the show!

Some of the best surfing of the day was surely in the Men’s Long board division with the entire finalist surfing top notch from the semi to the final. Alex Himmelberg, Bill Hayes, Mikey Paton, Alex Hobbs, Sunny Stevens and Josh Autrey were a pleasure to watch in the final and did not allow a wave to go unridden. Local legends Sunny and Josh put on a clinic on how to ride a long bard as did Alex Hobbs. Himmelberg, Hayes and Paton were no slouches putting on a display. The Mens Open Final brought out a legendary amateur ripper out of retirement from the contest scene and back into the mix earning both a first place in Open as well as a first place in Senior Men. Chuck Lanham was absolutely lighting up anything and everything in sight and we are happy to see him back in the ESA – St. Augustine District. Watch this guy surf! Seriously! Another name lighting it up once again was Jonathan Eden. Jonathan not only placed second in Open Men’s but lit it up for a first place finish in the highly competitive Junior Men’s division. Kid was on fire during the daily free surfs in Nag’s Head this year during Easterns. Moving back to that Open Division…in order Third place Dustin Estes, Sunny Stevens, Sean Fox and Forrest Linder made tough conditions look really good. Dustin also placed second in Masters. The Masters division saw Steve Tyson once again on top with a first place finish and some super solid surfing while Casey Piester finished in third place followed by Jonathan Beakaw. The Grand Masters Division had some serious finalist. Lynn Harrington stole the show with some rail to rail surfing that would make anyone jealous. Paul Lange was no slouch followed by legendary rippers Kirk Oswell and Bill Hayes. Senior Men saw some more action with local rippers in order Chuck Lanham, Sunny Stevens and myself. Morris Smith finished fourth. ESA Regional’s Senior Men competitors may need to keep a watch on our Senior Men’s Division.

The youth divisions were equally impressive with some incredible surfers in the making. ESA – St. Augustine has an incredible amount of talent under the age 16 and as young as 7. The future looks bright for many amateur careers. Starting off with the the Micro- Menehunes we get to see the future up front and close. Not to disappoint Benji Lange and Carl Burger were straight up ripping. Reading the waves like they have been doing it for 20 years. Incredible! Skylar Riddling and Kayden Miller were also having a blast not to mention surfing better than most of the beach goers. Great job grommies. Keep up the stoke we love watching you chargers! Stepping up to the 11 and under division we saw 10 year old sensation Ryan Huckabee surfing beyond his years take the win followed by Eden Lange edging out Blake Stevens for second. The groms put on a show even with the somewhat tough conditions. Wonder grommet Braeden Kopec charging with the big boys and girls took home fourth followed by Gabriel Debaun and Everett Plumer. The Boys Final had both Tommy Burger and Izaya Beams battling back in forth with Tommy edging out Izaya for the win.

The Girls final was stacked with Zoe Bonik, Eden Lange, Olivia Beaven and Taylor Eddy in order of placement making the members proud. The talent and progression at each contest for these girls is awe inspiring. Could we see a Lisa A. or Frieda Z.?  The Women’s Final brought out Jamie Dewitt, Chelsea Gresham and Molly O’ Donoghue and they did not disappoint either with some super loud cheers from the beach from the get go! Jamie took the win followed by Chelsea and Molly. Chelsea and Molly could not handle it sitting on the beach so they then took to the water again in the Women’s Longboard division where Chelsea took first and Molly took second. It was great seeing these two surf and they are missed in the local waters. Rachel Kopec was charging as usual and making us proud. Great stuff. The long boarding ruled all day and impressed with some outstanding performances, guts and determination. Taylor Eddy and Olivia Beaven the youngest in the heat surfed like naturals finishing with some nice placings, third and fourth respectively. Look forward to seeing our next generation of girls rip it up again next contest. Taylor and Olivia rip on shortboards too!

Finishing out the day was the costume heat that pitted Wolf Boy against Teenage Mutant Ninja in the final heat of the day. Wolf Boy was no match for TMN and his powers and the kid behind the mask took home the hardware. Great job Braeden Kopec and Brayden Bryant!

The day was not only beautiful but the waves were rideable, water was warm, families were smiling and we were able to show a past leader of our surfing Community that his time and dedication to ESA – St. Augustine was worth every moment.

Thanks Members, Pamela Hill, Will Gresham and Thank you Burgess Autrey.

Andrew DeLorenzo, Co-Director
